A vehicle plowed into a group of pedestrians, fatally striking a man early Saturday in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side.
A vehicle struck a man and three women crossing in the 3100 block of North Central Avenue at 12:40 a.m., police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said.
The vehicle fled north on Central Avenue and struck several cars before stopping, Gaines said.
Mario Ortega, 38, of the 4700 block of West Palmer Street, was pronounced dead at Our Lady of Resurrection Medical Center at 1:10 a.m., according to Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
A woman suffered a broken ankle and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, a second woman was taken in serious condition to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with injuries to her arm and hip, and a third woman was hospitalized at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The motorist was taken into custody, Gaines said.
The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
