Now one of the jobs ahead is to keep the kids safe going to their new schools.
“Too dangerous” was one of the many arguments against these school closings; there’s not enough police to protect children crossing gang territory.
School board member Dr. Mahalia Hines had the most interesting counter argument to this.
“We have not stepped up like we should. And I’m talking about us as African-Americans. We talk about safety. I don’t care how many police we bring and what this board does. The key to unsafe is if it does not start in the home.”
In any case, Chicago Police are promising a massive turnout to provide the children safe passage.
