Bicyclist struck by SUV, critically injured in Bridgeport

(CHICAGO) A man was critically injured Monday afternoon when he was struck by an SUV in the Bridgeport neighborhood on the South Side.

Joshua Thomas, 26, was driving a 2000 Dodge Durango in the 3500 block of South Lowe Avenue about 6 p.m. when he made a U-turn and struck a bicyclist, according to Chicago Police.

The bicyclist, a 47-year-old man, was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, police said, adding that he suffered a fractured pelvis.

Thomas, who lives in the 6200 block of South King Drive, was charged with reckless driving, driving on a revoked license and operating an uninsured vehicle, all misdemeanors, police said. He was also issued traffic citations for failure to exercise due care for a pedestrian in the roadway, failure to stay in his lane and executing an improper U-turn. He is scheduled to appear in traffic court June 21.

Police: Bicyclist killed in Kane County crash

(KANE, Co.) A bicyclist was kiled after being thrown from a bicycle in a crash in northwest suburban Kane County Monday afternoon, police said.

About 4:10 p.m., a 2009 Honda CRV traveling south was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Walker and Allen roads in incorporated Hampshire Township, according to a statement from the Kane County sheriff’s office.

The car was driving through the intersection when a bicyclist hit the passenger’s side door and the rider was thrown from the bicycle, police said. The rider, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver, a 64-year-old man, was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. He was ticketed for failure to yield right of way.

The identity of the bicyclist is being withheld pending family notification, police said.

Police do not believe drugs or alcohol factored in the crash.

Cyclist who tried to cross Route 394 fatally struck by vehicle

(CHICAGO HEIGHTS) A 59-year-old man riding a bicycle was fatally struck by a vehicle Wednesday night as he attempted to cross Route 394 in south suburban Chicago Heights.

About 7:49 p.m., Robert Kirn was riding his bicycle on Route 394 near East Sauk Trail in Chicago Heights when he attempted to cross both north and southbound traffic, Illinois State Police said.

Kirn, of the 600 block of Colleen Drive in Lynwood, was struck by a northbound vehicle and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced at 2:49 a.m. Thursday, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The driver was not issued any citations, police said.
