Cops: Crews use Narcan to save driver who caused crash while high

(PROSPECT HEIGHTS) Emergency crews used a heroin antidote to save a driver who caused a crash that injured himself and another person Sunday afternoon in northwest suburban Prospect Heights, police said.

The 31-year-old man was eastbound on Palatine Road when he rear-ended another car near Milwaukee Avenue shortly after noon, according to Prospect Heights police.

Officers and other motorists pulled the man from the car when they found that he had stopped breathing, police said. Items in his car led officers “to suspect illegal narcotics use,” and paramedics injected Narcan (naloxone), which can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, police said.

The man was stabilized and taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, police said. A 62-year-old person Wheeling resident in the other car was treated for minor injuries and released from another hospital.

The 31-year-old later admitted to injecting heroin before driving, police said. He was expected to be charged with DUI.

Chicago man hit by stray bullet as he state at kitchen table

(CHICAGO) Chicago police say they have no suspects in custody in the fatal shooting of a father of three as he sat at his kitchen table paying bills.

Authorities say a bullet fired during a fight on the street struck 32-year-old Demarco Kennedy in the neck late Tuesday. He died at a nearby hospital hours later.

Kennedy’s wife, Nicole, and children where in another room at the time of the shooting and weren’t injured.

Authorities say the shot came from the parking lot of a nearby fast-food restaurant. It traveled along a gangway and to a second-floor apartment, ricocheting off a window handle and striking Kennedy.

Kennedy’s cousin, Beverly Smith, on Wednesday described him as a “great dad” who loved his wife and children.
