Thousands of shoes were handed out to kids at ‘Anti-Bait Truck’ event on South Side

A container full of new shoes opened for kids in West Englewood Sunday, as thousands of pairs were given away during an “Anti-Bait Truck” event.

Rapper Vic Mensa’s SaveMoneySaveLife foundation organized the drive after video of the “bait trucks” went viral. The Norfolk Southern Railroad organized the sting, which involved trucks full of shoes that appeared to be unguarded. Police said they left the trucks in areas near rail yards, usually with just a twist tie to keep them shut, as a way to catch people in the act of stealing.

Mensa said he had about 15,000 pairs of shoes to give away Sunday, donated by people and organizations all over the world. He fully expected there to be enough for everybody. He said he has also been in touch with group homes, and he said there have been talks of holding additional events.

The rapper’s aides said they would have shoes made by Puma, Adidas, Nike and Converse to give away.

Whole Foods Opens in Englewood

By Jennifer Keiper, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO) A Whole Foods store has opened in Chicago’s poverty-stricken Englewood neighborhood today.

Congressman Bobby Rush attended the opening, and quoted the theme song form the TV Series “The Jeffersons.”

“This is not the end, this is just the beginning,” Rush said. “As George Jones would say, we’re moving on up…right here in Englewood,” Rush said.

The store, which has been in the works since 2013, employs some 100 residents.

It’s at the corner of West 63rd and South Halsted streets.
