Federal judge rules against effort for elected school board

(CHICAGO) A federal judge has rejected an effort by former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and some Chicago residents to force the city to adopt an elected school board.

Quinn and the residents filed a lawsuit in October contending a school board appointed by Chicago’s mayor violated the constitution and civil rights. They said such a board raises the question of taxation without representation.

The lawsuit included a demand that the city and Chicago Board of Education create a plan allowing for the election of school board members.

In her ruling issued Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Elaine E. Bucklo rejected those claims. She said the plaintiffs have no fundamental right to vote in school board elections as a matter of law.

Sexual assault charges filed against Harvey school board member

(CHICAGO) A board member of the school district in south suburban Harvey was charged with sexually assaulting a woman in the city’s municipal center last week.

Tyrone Rogers, 59, faces one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault and is scheduled to appear in court in south suburban Markham on Tuesday, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.

About 1 p.m. Friday, a 49-year-old woman went to the Harvey Municipal Center to meet with Rogers to “discuss a village issue with Rogers on behalf of a friend,” according to the sheriff’s office.

The woman “alleged that Rogers took her into an office inside the municipal center, locked the door an sexually assaulted her,” the sheriff’s office said.

Rogers was taken into police custody Saturday night, police said.

In a statement issued Monday night, Harvey city spokesman said: “Mr. Rogers has been placed on unpaid administrative leave. We will await the States Attorney’s detail of his charges tomorrow and determine additional actions concerning his employment.”

Rahm shakes up school board, teachers union not impressed

(Chicago) Mayor Rahm Emanuel is shaking up his school board in the wake of the federal investigation that forced out his school CEO.

Emanuel is replacing a U.S. Senate candidate, a retired Northwestern University president, a teacher and an education consultant with a retired banker, a retiring Loyola University President, a school foundation president and a CPS principal.

Teachers union vice president Jesse Sharkey is not impressed.

“It still lacks parent-community input and voice and I would’ve liked to have seen a clean sweep and do a completely new board,” Sharkey said. “I know that there are still a few people who remain. It’s likely to be more of the same.”

Sharkey says what Chicago needs is an elected school board but the mayor is adamantly opposed to that.
