Police: Teen who struck, killed man on Christmas Day was driving 80 mph

(ORLAND PARK) A 16-year-old was driving 80 mph in a 45 mph zone when he struck and killed a 71-year-old man in southwest suburban Orland Park on Christmas Day, police said.

About 7:27 p.m., the teen was driving a Honda Accord 80 mph in a posted 45 mph zone when he fatally hit Jack Haggerty as he was crossing 104th Avenue near San Luis Lane, according to a statement from Orland Park police.

Haggerty was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, where he was pronounced dead at 7:56 p.m., the coroner’s office said.

The 16-year-old driver and a 16-year-old passenger were also taken to Silver Cross to be treated for minor injuries, police said. Police did not specify their genders.

The teen — whose name was not released — was charged with misdemeanor aggravated speeding and failure to exercise due care with a pedestrian in the roadway. They are scheduled to appear in court in Bridgeview next on March 3.
