(CHICAGO) A teenager has been charged with shooting at a vehicle full of people he mistook for rival gang members, but instead injuring himself Sunday morning on the South Side.
The 17-year-old boy is charged as a juvenile with one count of attempted first-degree murder and six counts of aggravated battery/occupied vehicle, according to Chicago Police. His name was not released because of his age.
The teen was inside a Chevy Suburban that pulled alongside a parked car in the 4700 block of South Loomis about 9 a.m., police said. He shouted gang slogans and opened fire at the car before the Suburban drove off.
No one in the car was shot, but a 30-year-old woman was struck in the face and neck by shattered glass, police said. She was treated and released from Saint Anthony Hospital.
A few minutes later, the Suburban was pulled over at 15th and Halsted, and the teen was arrested and charged, police said. He had shot himself in the hand and suffered a graze wound to his forehead during the shooting.
Police said the people inside the car had no gang affiliations, and the shooting is thought to be a case of mistaken identity.
