(Chicago) Corrupt former State Representative Derrick Smith has been sentenced to five months in prison for taking a $7,000 cash bribe from an undercover campaign worker for a state grant.
In court, Smith stood before Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman and cried and said I am not a criminal, but the judge said he is, noted he did not admit he betrayed his constituents, but she only gave smith five months in prison. She said any more would be a waste of taxpayers’ money.
She told Smith the political gods had given him every advantage but he squandered it by taking a $7,000 bribe. It’s all on you, Mr. Smith, said the judge.
She also noted that no matter how many corrupt politicians the feds catch on tape, they just don’t get it. .
