Two rescued from apartment fire in St. Charles

(ST. CHARLES) Firefighters rescued two people, one of which was in a wheelchair, from an apartment fire Saturday night in west suburban St. Charles.

When firefighters responded to the fire about 11:50 p.m. at an apartment complex at 1742 Cumberland Green Dr., there was heavy smoke coming from the second floor and they found one person hanging over the balcony and another person in a wheelchair trapped in a bedroom, according to a statement from the St. Charles Fire Department.

One person was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva while the other person was treated at the scene, fire officials said. No firefighters were injured in the blaze.

The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes, leaving the apartment uninhabitable with damage estimated at $100,000, officials said.
