(WHEATON) A west suburban delivery man who had marijuana in his system when he fatally struck an elderly pedestrian in 2013 has been sentenced to probation.
James Rudzinski, 63, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of aggravated DUI causing a fatal accident during a hearing before Judge James Obbish, according to court records.
Rudzinski allegedly admitted to authorities that he smoked marijuana every day, including the night before he struck an elderly pedestrian with his truck on Dec. 12, 2013, in the 6300 block of North Narragansett, the Chicago Sun-Times reported previously.
Bronislawa Zajac, 82, was walking across the street when the delivery truck struck her as it was turning left at the intersection, authorities said.
A drug test revealed Rudzinski had cannabis in his system at the time of the crash, officials said.
Zajac, of the 6600 block of West 64th Place, was pronounced dead later that day at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
Rudzinski, of Wheaton, was sentenced to two years probation and an unspecified amount of community service, court records show.
