(CHICAGO) Nearly 20,000 people are still without power in the Chicago area after severe storms pummeled the area Sunday.
As of 5:30 a.m., about 19,000 customers were still without power in the city and suburbs after the storms, according to ComEd. At 11:15 p.m. Sunday, at least 41,000 customers were without power.
More than 200 crews are continuing to restore service Monday morning, according to the utility agency.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning about 9:30 p.m for Cook, Lake and McHenry counties. The warning expired at midnight for those counties.
A tornado warning briefly was issued for central Lake County, including Waukegan, Gurnee and Gages Lake, but was canceled about 9:05 p.m. Forecasters said radar and damage reports indicated a tornado might have touched down in Grayslake but it hadn’t been confirmed as of 10 p.m.
Storms pummeled the area beginning about 2:30 p.m., leaving a man dead in a porch collapse at a Wood Dale community fair and collapsing a sports dome in Rosemont.
Lollapalooza organizers bumped up the music schedule for the final day of the festival to try and squeeze in all performers to avoid a second evacuation of the day. They ended up cutting the night short about half an hour early due to the approaching storms at 10 p.m., officials said.
Forecasters said Monday morning the weather is expected to improve over the next few days, with cooler temperatures in the 80s and low humidity.
