(CHICAGO) One Illinois lawmaker is reacting House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) stepping out of the Speaker race.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) hopes cooler heads will prevail as Republicans look for their next House Speaker after McCarthy’s surprise announcement.
“One of the things that troubles me the most was there was an ultimatum from the so called Freedom Caucus which said that any future Speaker of the House that they would support has to guarantee that they wouldn’t enter into any compromises with the Senate,” Durbin said. “I can just tell you that that’s a guarantee for a disaster when it comes to our budget and to the nation’s economy.”
It’s unlikely to happen, but Durbin is holding out hope that Republicans “will link up with Democrats to get something done.”
