(CHICAGO) Governor Rauner, today, called reporters to the Thompson Center downtown to say he wants to sell the place.
To both save & make millions, Rauner says the Thompson Center ought to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Moving state employees out he says would save $6-12M a year. In addition to what this prime Loop location would fetch on the open market, Rauner says it would make millions for Chicago.
“This should generate, depending on the size of the new building put in here, something like $20 million per year, in new city and school taxes, for the benefit of local taxpayers – a lot of money – because right now, as a government building it is not on the city tax rolls,” said Governor Rauner.
Rauner needs the legislature’s okay, and he says House Speaker Mike Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton are “forward leaning” so far.
