(CHICAGO) A former Illinois lawmaker, convicted of bribery and attempted extortion, has to report to prison today.
In June 2014, former Illinois State Representative Derrick Smith of Chicago was found guilty of accepting a $7,000 cash bribe in exchange for writing a letter of support for a day care center that wanted a state grant.
Smith was caught on secret recordings during an FBI sting.
Smith’s lawyers have tried to keep him out of prison while they appeal but, earlier this week, a judge shot down that request.
The former Rep. has to serve 5 months behind bars.
