(BOLINGBROOK, IL) A Bolingbrook man who was arrested at O’Hare trying to board a flight overseas to join ISIS pleaded guilty today to attempting to provide material support to terrorists.
Prosecutors have recommended a sentence of five years in prison if 20-year-old If Mohammed Hamzah Khan continues to cooperate with law enforcement.
Prosecutors say Khan was arrested last October when he and his younger brother and sister tried to board an overseas bound flight.
Listen to Nick Gale’s report for WLS radio news:
Khan allegedly told agents that he had been in contact with a man online who he thought was a member of ISIS and admitted plotting to travel to Turkey to meet the man and head to Syria.
Kahn’s siblings were questioned by the FBI but were not charged.
Khan’s attorney argued that while perhaps misguided, it was in an attempt to express his religious freedom.
