(CHICAGO) A person of interest that was being questioned in the shooting death of a 9-year-old boy has been released by Chicago police.
That person of interest walked into a police station Wednesday afternoon accompanied by well known criminal defense attorney Sam Adam, Jr.
Adam says he was contacted by police to help get the person of interest in for questioning safely.
Listen to Nick Gale’s report for WLS radio news here:
“Community has to have leadership. They have to have people come forward in leadership positions,” Adam said. “Whether it be a lawyer or a politician or a priest and say you can come to us with information and we will make sure you’re being treated fairly. That’s why we have the justice system that we have is so that we don’t treat people the way that Tyshawn Lee was treated on the street.
Adam wouldn’t offer details of the nine-hour questioning session.
Nine-year old Tyshawn Lee was shot several times Monday afternoon at close range in an alley near his grandmother’s home in Chicago’s Gresham neighborhood.
Investigators are looking at all possible motives including that the child was targeted in retaliation for recent gang murders. Police say his father had gang ties.
Visitation and funeral services are set for Tuesday morning at St. Sabina Church.
A $35,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
