Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says that Peoples Gas should be probed to see if it helped grease its $5.7 billion merger by deliberately hiding from state regulators details of a wildly over budget program to replace aging pipes under Chicago streets.
The utility — which delivers natural gas to 831,000 Chicago customers — has long been under fire for its handling of the project to replace 2,000 miles of aging, leak-prone iron pipes with plastic lines. The cost of the project had ballooned from $2.6 billion to more than $8 billion.
ABC 7 Investigative Reporter Jason Knowles joined John Howell to explain the story.
