(CHICAGO) Five protesters were arrested during a Tuesday night march following the release of dashcam footage of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald’s shooting.
Malcolm X. London, 22, was charged with one felony count of aggravated battery to a police officer, according to a statement from Chicago Police.
Police said London, of the 4900 block of West Huron Street, struck an off-duty police officer in the 100 block of East Balbo about 7:25 p.m. Tuesday. The officer was released with non-life-threatening injuries.
Dean M. Vanriper, 38, was charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance, one misdemeanor count of unlawful use of a weapon, and one misdemeanor count of possession of a deadly weapon, police said. The California resident had a taser and a knife.
Three others were charged with one misdemeanor count each of resisting a police officer. Johnae A. Strong, 25, of the 1400 block of East 55th Street; Troy T. Alim, 24, of the 4600 block of South Drexel Boulevard; and May Page, 26, of the 5300 block of South Harper Avenue were all released on their own recognizance, police said.
About 300 to 400 protesters angry about McDonald’s killing took to the streets Tuesday night, marching from University Village to the Loop, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. A confrontation between protesters and police broke out near Michigan and Balbo.
In the full-on pushing match that lasted 15 minutes, officers, protesters and police bikes were left sprawled on the ground, the Sun-Times reported. When the scuffle ended, three protesters were hauled into a police wagon. A commander at the scene confirmed that four cops were injured in the scuffle. The Chicago Teachers Union said one of those arrested was a Chicago Public Schools teacher.
One officer lost his cool, calling one young woman a “b – – – -.” The crowd was infuriated, and a commander came and removed the officer from the front line.
London and Vanriper are expected to appear in bond court Wednesday.
