Bond has been set at $1.5 million for a Chicago Police Officer charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 17-year-old.
Officer Jason Van Dyke was charged last week in the shooting death of Laquan McDonald, but bond wasn’t set because the judge hadn’t seen the dash-cam video that captured the shooting last October.
The video footage shows Van Dyke shooting McDonald 16 times as the teen walked down Pulaski high on PCP and armed with a knife.
The video stirred anger in the black community following its release last Tuesday and has led to several protests in the city.
Listen to Nick Gale’s report for WLS News radio:
Van Dyke is the first Chicago cop to be charged with murder for an on-duty shooting in more than 30 years. Protestors, including Jesse Jackson, have called for the resignation of Police Supt. Garry McCarthy, State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
