(CHICAGO) Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez announced Monday that Chicago Police Officer George Hernandez will not be charged in the shooting death of Ronald Johnson.
“Based upon an objective review of the evidence and the law, we have determined that the prosecution could not establish beyond a reasonable doubt that the actions of Officer Hernandez were not reasonable and permissible under the laws of the State of Illinois,” Alvarez said.
Hernandez fired five shots at Johnson, striking him twice. Showing a dash-cam video, Alvarez says Johnson had a gun in his hand and had avoided several orders by police to drop the gun. She says a gun was recovered at the scene.
Johnson was shot eight days before a police officer shot and killed 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in October 2014. McDonald was armed with a knife and high on PCP. That officer is facing first degree murder charges.
