(CHICAGO) There have been concerns about getting tied up at airports and not being able to use your Illinois driver’s license at security checkpoints because Illinois has not complied with the Real ID Act.
It’s a post September 11 law that has tightened requirements for state-issued IDs.
However, good news today, the Department of Homeland Security has just announced that passengers can keep using their IDs from non-compliant states until January 22, 2018. Some will be able to do so until Oct. 1, 2020. After that, you’d have to use a passport.
Illinois is among five states that have not complied with the Real ID Act.
Illinois officials say switching driver’s licenses would cost millions of dollars and this is a state that doesn’t even have a new budget.
