According to a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), overnight lane closures will take place over several days starting on Sunday, Jan. 10 and concluding on Friday, Jan. 15, weather permitting. The roadwork includes a complete closure of southbound Lake Shore Drive (U.S. 41).

All southbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive will shut down near Solider Field at 11 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 10, with planned reopening at 5 a.m. Monday. This same closure will continue on each night from Tuesday, Jan. 12 through Friday, Jan. 15th. Traffic will be directed from southbound Lake Shore Drive to the southbound Stevenson ramp to exit at State Street.

For motorists traveling southbound on Lake Shore Drive, it is recommended to exit the drive at Roosevelt Road, proceed west to State Street, then turn left to travel south on State Street to the Stevenson entrance ramp.

Also in this series of closures includes the inbound Stevenson ramp to northbound Lake Shore Drive. This ramp will be closed for the same duration as the southbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive, each evening from Sunday, Jan. 12, through Friday, Jan. 15. According to IDOT, the posted detour will direct traffic to the inbound Stevenson and to southbound Lake Shore Drive ramp. Motorists should exit at the 31st Street exit and immediately re-enter northbound Lake Shore Drive.
The closures are required for the installation of new bridge beams. The is the second part of a two-contract project slated to conclude in the winter months of 2017.
