(CHICAGO) In the Chicago school crisis, layoffs have been officially announced this afternoon.
CPS says 483 central office positions are being cut, more than 200 are actual layoffs, the rest are vacant positions. Mayor Rahm Emanuel justifies them like this.
“Look, I think its better to make cuts in the central office so you protect the classroom and to make sure that the resources are driven into the area that support our principals and our teachers,” Emanuel said.
Emanuel said again CPS has 20-percent of the state’s students but is getting only 15-percent of the state school aid, so he says Springfield needs to end the inequity. Meantime, there’s a new positive tone coming out of Chicago Teachers Union negotiations.
