(ORLAND PARK) A hoverboard exploded while charging inside a home in southwest suburban Orland Park Sunday evening.
It was the first time the new hoverboard was plugged into a family room outlet at the home in the 17200 block of Deer Trail when it blew up shortly before 5 p.m., sending several burning pieces across the room, according to Orland Park village spokesman Ray Hanania.
Family members extinguished small fires on a window shade and couch by the time fire crews arrived. One person was evaluated at the scene but declined further medical attention, Hanania said.
Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said it was investigating “dozens” of fires caused by the popular self-balancing scooters. They urge owners to have a fire extinguisher nearby while charging hoverboards away from combustible materials.
