(CHICAGO) U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk has called on the VA to fire its mental health director.
Kirk has sent a letter to VA Secretary Bob McDonald Monday saying Dr. Mary Schohn should lose her job because callers to the Veterans Crisis Line were placed on hold or sent to voicemail.
An internal report released earlier the month found that at least 23 veterans who called in 2014 were transferred to voicemail, and their calls were never returned.
VA officials say the problems stemmed from routing calls to backup centers when the main lines in New York were overloaded.
