(CHICAGO) U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) is breaking from his party, saying President Barack Obama should choose a nominee to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
Referencing the event that changed his life, a stroke in 2012, Kirk says his job is not to represent a party, but rather protect and uphold the constitution.
He goes on to say in a editorial piece in the Sun-Times that he looks forward to the president advancing a nominee for the Senate to consider.
He says his sincerest hope is that Obama will nominate someone who captures the sentiment he spoke about before the Illinois General Assembly this month; a nominee who can bridge differences, find common ground and does not speak or act in the extreme.
Most Republicans have argued that Obama should let the next sitting president make the nomination.
