(CHICAGO) Hospital officials today have confirmed the first case of Zika Virus in Chicago.
Officials at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital a woman in her 30’s had recently traveled to Columbia and became ill in late January. She sought treatment from her physician and eventually recovered on her own.
She was never hospitalized, but was tested for several things including Zika. Now the Centers for Disease Control says that test came back positive for the Zika Virus.
The CDC expects the number of Zika cases to grow as students head to warm weather destinations for spring break.
Zika can cause microcephaly, a condition where babies are born with small heads and incomplete brain development.
There have been dozens of cases reported across the U.S. but this is the first case in Chicago and the fifth known case in Illinois.
