(CHICAGO) Snow is not uncommon in April, but the Chicago area will see “roller coaster” weather throughout the weekend — with snow on Saturday transitioning into a sunny, warm Sunday, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.
“It’s like a different season every day,” National Weather Service meteorologist Ricky Castro said.

On Saturday, Chicagoans woke up to snow and heavy winds which reached up to 56 mph at Midway Airport and between 55 and 60 mph in northern Illinois, Castro said.
Snow in early April is fairly common. The record snow for April 2 was 9.4 inches in 1975. It most recently snowed in early April in 2014, when 1.4 inches fell on April 14.
“It’s definitely not uncommon to get accumulated snow in April, especially in the earlier half of the month. It becomes more uncommon as you get late in April,” Castro said. “It’s spring. Nobody wants winter weather, but we had it pretty easy this winter.”
Cold masses are still around northern America and when there’s enough cold air around, you’ll see some snow, even in April, he said.
The cold temperatures and snow will change drastically on Sunday, when temperatures are expected to rise to 60 degrees.
“It’s a roller coaster ride with strong southwest winds. We could see wind gusts around 40 mph out of the southwest and it’ll be much warmer,” Castro said, adding the warmness will be short-lived with a cold front coming back for Chicago with temperatures to plunge to the upper 30s by Sunday night.
The high and lows will continue throughout the week.
“We’re going kind of back and forth with this roller coaster weather,” Castro said.
