Wrigleyville Congressman:   Ballpark could be terror target.

(CHICAGO) Chicago Democratic Congressman Mike Quigley is raising the possibility that terrorists could want to target Wrigley Field, during a crowded home game.

Quigley, while taping the “Connected to Chicago” program with Bill Cameron on WLS, said the streets around Wrigley Field ought to be closed on game days to better create a security perimeter.

“Wrigley Field was built and designed at a time when people got to the ballpark by trolley, train and horse cart,” Quigley told Cameron. “So Wrigley Field is very close to the street, so there’s a number of measures that have taken place this year, such as installing metal detectors outside the park. I think opening day we’ll see more metal detectors than any other park in baseball.

Mayor Emanuel’s office has said it is unlikely that major thoroughfares such as Clark and Addison would be permanently shut down on game days, because of how badly that would inconvenience the local neighborhood.

This year is the first year Wrigley Field is using metal detectors to screen fans entering the ballpark.   The Cubs open their 2016 home season tonight against the Cincinnati Reds.
