Police investigate social media threats at Glen Ellyn high school

(GLEN ELLYN) Police are investigating violent threats made on social media against students at a west suburban Glen Ellyn high school.

Authorities received reports Thursday that a student at Glenbard West High School, at 670 Crescent Blvd., was threatening violence against other students, according to Glen Ellyn police.

Investigators soon concluded that no one at the school was in danger but will continue to follow up on the incident, police said. No arrests were made.

“Unfortunately, incidents like these occur in schools today,” Dr. Peter Monaghan, principal of Glenbard West, said in a statement on the school’s website. “Be assured, every rumor is treated seriously. Please understand that in any situation such as this, our primary focus is on working closely with law enforcement and keeping students and staff safe while we determine the credibility of a threat.”

Monaghan said authorities “have identified the source of the post, and have taken the necessary steps to ensure the safety of our students and staff.”

Classes will be be in session Friday and there will be additional officers on and around campus, Monaghan and police said.
