Bicyclist struck by SUV, critically injured in Bridgeport

(CHICAGO) A man was critically injured Monday afternoon when he was struck by an SUV in the Bridgeport neighborhood on the South Side.

Joshua Thomas, 26, was driving a 2000 Dodge Durango in the 3500 block of South Lowe Avenue about 6 p.m. when he made a U-turn and struck a bicyclist, according to Chicago Police.

The bicyclist, a 47-year-old man, was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, police said, adding that he suffered a fractured pelvis.

Thomas, who lives in the 6200 block of South King Drive, was charged with reckless driving, driving on a revoked license and operating an uninsured vehicle, all misdemeanors, police said. He was also issued traffic citations for failure to exercise due care for a pedestrian in the roadway, failure to stay in his lane and executing an improper U-turn. He is scheduled to appear in traffic court June 21.
