Memorial Day Morning: Fisher House Heroes

If you’re listening for John Howell on Memorial Day morning, we’ve given him the day off.

Instead, he and all of WLS-AM 890 are proud to present “Fisher House Heroes” – a radio special produced by and for the Fisher House Foundation.

Simply put, Fisher Houses provide military families housing close to a loved one during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury.

Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment.

These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, close to the medical center or hospital they serve. Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is never a lodging fee. Since inception, the program has saved military and veterans’ families an estimated $320 million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation.

In today’s show,  Medal of Honor recipient Florent Groberg reflects on life after receiving the ribbon. His parents stayed in a Fisher House during his recovery from an attack by a suicide bomber. This segment is a special re-broadcast from the Jonathan Brandmeier show, heard right here on WLS-AM late last year.

The show does not solicit donations. It is designed to build awareness for the foundation’s network of no-cost comfort homes built on the grounds of VA and military medical centers, allowing military families to stay near a hospitalized loved one for as long as medically necessary.
