(CHICAGO) The budget standoff continues with lawmakers Tuesday night failing to come up with a budget plan before their summer recess.
At City Hall Mayor Rahm Emanuel is so far silent on the continuation of the Springfield standoff, but one of his deputies is talking.
While Rahm was conspicuously not reacting in person, one of his deputy mayors, Steve Koch, was at an Atlantic Monthly forum downtown talking big picture about the state of politics generally.
“Most people don’t pay enough attention to politics, public life, to elections and they do not hold public officials accountable,” Koch said. “And the reality is there is an enormous reward in American public life for being short sighted, for giving candy now and not worrying about the cavities later. That’s reality. That is what happened in Chicago. For many, many years we didn’t pay our bills. Its not overly complicated. You have to pay your bills eventually or else you’re going to hit the wall. We hit the wall. We’re dealing with that now.”
And it’s evident that in Springfield right now they really are not paying the bills.
