(LOMBARD) The owner of a weight-loss center teamed up with a physician in an illegal appetite suppressant scheme that netted them $790,000 over about two years in west suburban Lombard.
Naperville resident Michael Jennings, 48, and Burr Ridge resident William Mikaitis, 72, each face 16 counts of various distribution and illegal medical practice charges, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. The charges carry a maximum combined sentence of 95 years in prison for each man.
Mikaitis, a doctor with a practice in Lockport, is also charged with one count of illegal monetary transaction involving criminal property, which could mean up to another 10 years for him, prosecutors said.
Jennings, the owner of Results Weight Loss Center in Lombard, paid Mikaitis $75,000 between February 2013 and January 2015 to use the older man’s physician’s federal registration number so that Jennings could order and sell hundreds of thousands of dosages of the appetite suppressants phendimetrazine and phentermine, prosecutors allege.
Mikaitis was rarely at the weight loss center, and Jennings — who has no medical background — identified himself to patients as “Dr. Mikaitis,” ordering prescriptions without conducting meaningful exams or tests, prosecutors said.
Both men are scheduled for arraignment June 9.
