MADISON, Wis. (AP) — House Speaker Paul Ryan says in a fundraising email that Republican incumbent Sen. Ron Johnson is “not a Washington insider.”
Ryan says in the email sent Friday that Johnson is a manufacturer from Oshkosh.
Johnson has played up his manufacturing background in his re-election campaign against Democrat Russ Feingold. Johnson’s only television ad so far was shot on the manufacturing floor of the company he helped build, but that he no longer works for.
Even so, Johnson refers to himself as a manufacturer in the spot. His campaign has been trying to cast Feingold as a career politician given his 18-year Senate career, decade in the state Senate and other years of government service.
Feingold counters that Johnson is trying to distance himself from his record in the Senate.
