CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago and Airbnb have been battling over proposed regulations for the short-term rental industry in the city for months. But the debate has also been playing out more quietly in smaller communities across Illinois.
From Urbana to suburban Chicago the cities have found their own ways to either generate new revenues or simply quell complaints about rowdy out-of-towners.
The tranquil suburb of Lincolnwood has rewritten its laws to discourage rentals shorter than 30 days as a way to preserve community character. Urbana looks to its existing rules covering zoning and hotels to require registration, fees or, sometimes, a zoning permit.
The issue has also cropped up in Springfield, Wilmette and Evanston.
Chicago’s latest proposal regulating the online companies is expected in a committee and the full City Council this week.
