(CHICAGO) Police are investigating after a Portage Park man woke to find a cross burning in their lawn.
The incident happened around 7 a.m. Tuesday in the 4400 block of North Monitor Avenue.
Police say the home belongs to a 62-year-old white man and the case is currently classified as a simple assault but could be reclassified as a hate crime depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Ald. John Arena (45th) called the incident a “grotesque and cowardly display of hatred and bigotry.”
Arena urges anyone with information to call Area North detectives.
