(CHICAGO) O’Hare is getting another multi-billion dollar facelift. Mayor Emanuel and Senator Dick Durbin announced Friday a planned expansion of International Terminal 5 and a complete teardown and rebuild of Terminal 2.
In the international terminal, the new project will add 9 new gates for overseas flights. Meanwhile, Terminal 2 will be completely demolished and rebuilt into a central hub terminal, including a new customs area, more space for security screening, and added restaurants and concessions.
Aviation Department spokesman Owen Kilmer told the Chicago Tribune Friday that construction details and funding on that massive Terminal 2 project “are still being discussed with our airline partners.”
City officials say the changes will allow travelers to have easier flight connections and make leaving O’Hare easier. As for the cost, Emanuel said Chicago taxpayers will not be shelling out a dime. The costs will be picked up by the airlines and existing passenger facility charges- a fee tacked onto each airplane ticket.
