Anti-doping agency calls for Olympic ban on Russian athletes

(CHICAGO)  The World Anti-Doping Agency on Monday recommended banning all Russian athletes from the Rio Games.

An investigation commissioned by the agency says Russia’s sports ministry “directed, controlled and oversaw” manipulation of urine samples provided by its athletes. The recommendation on a full ban comes as a report was released today showing Russia covered up 580 positive doping tests across 30 different sports.

The cover-up was “planned and operated” from late 2011 until August 2015, including both the 2012 London and 2014 Sochi games.

Russia’s track and field athletes are already banned- this extension would apply to all athletes in all sports. The International Olympic Committee is expected to announce any changes in the ban on Tuesday.
