(CHICAGO) With high heat and humidity in the forecast for the next few days, possibly into the weekend, conditions exist for heat related illnesses like Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness and clammy skin and those affected should be moved to a cooler location, sip water and loosen clothing.
“Heat Stroke is a little bit different in the sense that the person typically will have hot red skin, sometimes it’s dry and they will have a very rapid pulse,” said Illinois Department of Public Health spokeswoman Melaney Arnold. “This is an immediate emergency situation so you need to call 911, move the person to a cooler location but do not give them any fluids.”
Health officials advise staying well hydrated and limiting outdoor activity to prevent these illnesses.
