(CHICAGO) The Kane County State’s Attorney has been appointed as the special prosecutor in the murder charge against former Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke.
Joseph H. McMahon was sworn in Thursday afternoon and was handed the official court file to review. Van Dyke is accused of shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in 2014. The shooting was captured on police dash cam video.
McMahon began his legal career in 1992 as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Kane County. He was appointed State’s Attorney in 2010. His appointment comes after Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez recused herself from prosecuting the case after she lost re-election.
The next court date is scheduled for August 18.
