(CHICAGO) Chicago’s Top Cop Eddie Johnson says he is recommending the Police Board fire seven officers who were on the scene the night that officer Jason VanDyke fired 16 shots into the body of black teenager LaQuan McDonald in October of 2014.
The incident was captured on video resulting in murder charges against Van Dyke.
Johnson says he has reviewed the evidence the City Inspector General gathered and is following the IG recommendation that seven cops be fired for lying about what happened. Johnson disagrees with the recommendation that an eighth officer be dismissed.
The officers have been relieved of their police powers. Two other cops on the scene that night have since retired.
Sources have told the Chicago Sun-Times that IG Joe Ferguson will now investigate what then-Supt. Garry McCarthy and his executive staff knew about the discrepancies between the video and police officers’ accounts, and what they did about it.
