(CHICAGO) Now that the Illinois State Supreme Court has thrown out the independent maps referendum, former governor and veteran petition-passer Pat Quinn is proposing his own language to let voters choose their legislators instead of the other way around.
Standing at his old lectern at the Thompson Center, for the first time since losing to Bruce Rauner, Quinn proposed simpler language. It would let the elected Supreme Court justices nominate what he calls a Fair Redistricting Commission. Seven of its 11 members would have to agree on a new legislative map.
“This fair redistricting amendment is quite a bit more simpler, cleaner and pristine,” Quinn said Tuesday.
But isn’t it a little awkward for Quinn to be agreeing with something Bruce Rauner supports?
“He can talk about things but you’ve got to have outcomes,” Quinn said.
Quinn hopes the Independent Maps folks try again with his language and they’re going to announce their next step Wednesday morning.
