(CHICAGO) The leaders of the Chicago Teachers Union have announced they will ask teachers- again- if they’re willing to strike if contract talks with the city fall though. CTU held a meeting Wednesday night.
At that meeting, members approved a September 21st strike authorization vote. If a strike is authorized, teachers could be walking off the job as soon as October. That vote was set after a Wednesday bargaining session between the union and city failed to yield a new contract.
CTU President Karen Lewis called a proposed increase in healthcare costs and a 3.5 percent increase in pension contributions from teachers ‘unacceptable.’ The city and Mayor Rahm Emanuel said those concessions are needed to keep classroom and school resources level.
A teacher strike- should it come- would be the first since 2012.
