(CHICAGO) Kyle Hendricks has emerged as the ace of the Chicago Cubs’ staff while the team runs away with the National League Central title. He almost added a no-hitter to the Cubs’ exceptional season while also lowering his major league-leading ERA.
Hendricks is 15-7 with a 2.03 earned run average after working eight-plus innings to lead a 4-1 triumph over the Cardinals in St. Louis. The no-hit bid lasted until Jeremy Hazelbaker homered leading off the bottom of the ninth to end Hendricks’ night.
Ben Zobrist and Dexter Fowler homered as the Cubs improved to 92-51 and reduced their magic number to three for winning their division.
The Cardinals remain a half-game behind the New York Mets in the battle for the final NL wild-card berth.
