(CHICAGO) Mayor Emanuel and Police Supt Eddie Johnson are today officially announcing more cops to fight street violence, but the number is up to interpretation.
Looks like the number of new bodies is 516, but City Hall is trying to get you to think it’s really 970 by promoting cops already on the force to be detectives, sergeants, lieutenants and field training officers.
Whatever the number, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said on “Connected to Chicago” Sunday it’s going to take more than additional cops.
“There’s also a big piece with summer jobs that we’ve dramatically grown in my tenure, also after school, and a significant piece in mentoring to keep kids in school and on the right track so the rest of their lives are more secure from a values and economic basis.”
But he said none of this is going to do a lot unless people begin seeing the police as part of the solution to street violence.
