(CHICAGO) Tonight, Mayor Emanuel delivers his major policy speech on combating street violence. His comprehensive proposal will include hiring more cops, which may sound familiar to you.
Before Emanuel was for hiring more cops, he was against it, while his challenger in last year’s runoff election, Chuy Garcia was for it. Garcia even had a way to pay for it. On “Connected to Chicago” three days before the runoff, he said he’d pay for it with saving in police overtime, and this.
“I think because public safety is a great priority, you can use potentially tax increment financing dollars to do that – not all of it, but as a priority. I think with my revenue enhancing proposal, looking at review of the assessments of downtown properties, there are also additional dollars that could be had there.”
Garcia lost the election, but Emanuel is now proposing to hire more cops but he’s not yet saying how he’d pay for them.
