CHICAGO (AP) — An Illinois Democratic congresswoman attended the state funeral of former Israeli President Shimon Peres as part of President Barack Obama’s delegation.
U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Evanston was among the dignitaries who accompanied the president to Friday’s funeral in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Peres died Wednesday at the age of 93. He was awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize after he secretly helped broker the historic Oslo interim peace accords with the Palestinians. He shared the prize with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
In a statement, Schakowsky called Peres “a tireless advocate for peace” and “an exemplary statesman.” She says “the best way (to) honor his legacy is to keep working for peace.”
