(CHICAGO) Several hours of Chicago City Council hearings are advancing Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s police accountability changes to a full City Council vote Wednesday.
Some of the mayor’s political enemies urged even further delay because they don’t think the proposed civilian review is civilian enough, but Emanuel’s lawyer Steve Patton said further delay would cause tremendous harm.
“We are at or very close to a crisis point here and its going to hurt complainants, it going to hurt police accountability its going to hurt accused officers and its going to hurt victims, OK, because they are the folks whose current complaints are not being investigated,” Patton said.
Patton did announce two new changes. One would allow retired police officers to be police oversight investigators if they’ve been retired for at least five years and another allowing any three aldermen to demand a police superintendent testify why a reform policy is not being implemented.
